I don’t take care of him, he takes care of me.

It started with a simple idea. Get a dog, and get moving again.

The impetus for change came from my deteriorating health. On the cusp of turning 40 three years ago, my body felt much older than its chronological age. I was in the worst shape of my life. I had put on a lot of weight, around 30 pounds in three years. Low back pain, knee pain, and migraines were recurring with greater frequency. According to my body fat percentage, I was officially obese. My doctor told me to do something about my cholesterol and blood pressure levels. …

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest entry promises to deliver on its “glorious purpose”

Photo by Erik Mclean on Unsplash

“The first and most oppressive lie ever uttered was the song of freedom. For nearly every living thing, choice breeds shame and uncertainty and regret. There is a fork in every path, yet the wrong path is always taken.” ~ Loki

The third in Marvel Studios’ television series after WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki could prove to be the best one yet.

Like most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) better entries, Loki bears, even requires, repeated viewing in order to grasp the links to the movies and television series that came before it, as well…

Week 2 of Pride Month

Source: Apple

It’s week 2 of Pride Month on Apple Fitness+ and it is dance trainer Ben Allen’s turn to front the introductory video. The highlights this week are relatively brief, namely Anja’s 20-minute HIIT workout, Ben’s own 20-minute dance workout and Jonelle’s 30-minute yoga workout. There was an explanation of how the exercise minutes on the Activity Rings work, encouraging us to try more intense activity one minute at a time to close the ring.

Here are my 5 favorite workouts from this week’s selection. Extra credit went to the two trainers (Ben and Jonelle) who incorporated Pride into their workouts.

Unexpected benefits to the dog’s and my fitness, health, and well-being

Photo by Matthew Henry on Unsplash

The dog recently decided that it wanted to be part of my evening yoga workouts.

Initially, he thought my yoga poses were an invitation to play. This is understandable, as “downward-facing dog” resembles the dog’s “play bow.” It’s also not often that I’m on the ground interacting with him at his eye level.

While I would not play with him during yoga, the dog decided that he could nevertheless still play with me. The transitions between the different yoga poses effectively transform me into a dog playground, which he can weave around or even climb aboard. …

The objective of calorie counting is not what you imagine it to be

Photo by Jeremy Zero on Unsplash

I get it — self-monitoring is tedious.

Even the definition of self-monitoring is tedious. According to the American Psychological Association, self-monitoring is “a method used in behavioral management in which individuals keep a record of their behavior, especially in connection with efforts to change or control the self.”

In the context of fat loss or weight management, self-monitoring brings to mind counting calories, logging workouts, and taking body measurements in an interminable, joyless loop.

It does not have to be that way. My experience with self-monitoring was…

For the last time I will receive the $500 bonus

Photo by bruce mars on Unsplash

Once again, Medium is abuzz with articles about the reader engagement bonus. Congratulations to those who received the bonus, whether for the first or second time; commiserations to the many worthy writers who missed out.

I received the $500 bonus for the second month in a row. I am humbled and grateful but I know not to take it too seriously.

That I’m among the top 1,000 writers on Medium is, frankly , hilarious. I have only been writing here for 2 months. I average 1 to 2 articles a week. …

It’s time for some Pride-themed workouts, playlists, and merchandise!

Photo by Sharon McCutcheon on Unsplash

It’s Pride Month and Apple Fitness+ has embraced the occasion in a big way with a series of Pride-themed workouts and cool new accessories for the Apple Watch.

In this week’s introductory video, “gay, black, and proud” cycling coach Tyrell explains that at Fitness+ “we celebrate what makes every person unique no matter how you identify” and calls on the LGBTQ+ community and their allies to “spread the love”. Ty highlights two of the themed workouts by HIIT coach Bakari and yoga coach Molly, which focus on the Pride flag and self-love respectively. …

5 daily habits that keep me healthy, productive, and happy

Photo by Harry Burk on Unsplash

The past few days, I have woken up to find the dog sleeping next to me. He had somehow developed a new habit of migrating from his usual spot at the foot of the bed (where he can keep an eye on the door) about an hour before sunrise.

I can only speculate on the dog’s reasons for doing so. Perhaps he got cold in the mornings and moved closer for warmth. Or maybe he came over to check if I was still breathing. (I do that to him sometimes as well.) However, I prefer to think that he does…

Fat Loss

The first part of an experience- and evidence-based series on fat loss

Photo by Patrick Hendry on Unsplash

After more than 40 years of being skinny, skinny fat, and eventually fat, I am finally comfortable in my own skin. I attribute this to my experience with fat loss. This is not to say that I am 100% happy with my body; it will always be a work in progress. However, I feel good about where I’m at and where I’m headed.

At the most superficial level, I feel much better about how I look. There are a few more wrinkles and age spots and the bones creak a little more, but I feel like I’m in the best…

Is it me, the dog, or something else?

Photo by Jose Carlos Ichiro on Unsplash

It felt like another of life’s small but meaningful observations.

Three years ago, I was living in Tokyo and had just gotten a puppy. On one of our first walks, a stranger approached me to ask for directions. It struck me afterward that, although I had lived in the city for 7 years by that time, it was the first time someone had asked me for directions.

I witnessed the same phenomenon when I moved to Singapore, where I currently live. …
